In today’s world, protecting the environment and the planet for future generations is becoming more and more important. In fact, consumers are demanding change. Many companies across the globe—and across a variety of industries—are making sustainability a top priority in their strategic plans. The plastics industry is no exception. At Drug Plastics, we continually look for ways to reduce our own carbon footprint, and help our customers do the same.
We are pleased to offer these new Sustainability Calculators to help customers improve carbon footprint. From switching to more eco-friendly resin and eliminating flame treatment, to calculating the savings gained from choosing PET plastic over glass, our new tools will show you how simple changes can have a big impact on the environment.
Opt Out of the Flame Treatment Process
Conserve fossil fuels like natural gas by opting out of the flame treatment process. Historically, flaming in the plastic bottle manufacturing process ensured that water-based adhesive labels and silk screening would adhere properly to HDPE, LDPE, and PP bottles. Today, depending on the label type used, this is not always necessary (we recommend consulting with your label provider). Therefore, when the flame treatment process is eliminated, less CO2 is released into the atmosphere.

Reduce the Amount of Collateral Packaging
Many customers have decided that double bagging is unnecessary and a step in the right direction to reduce their carbon footprint. Use our Bag Reduction Calculator and find out how much you can save on each order by eliminating the additional bag.
Save CO2 Emissions by Using Natural Resin
Titanium dioxide concentrate is a white pigment that is added to natural plastic resin to make the bottle white. Switching from pigmented bottles (no matter what color) to those made from resin in its natural color state makes a big difference in carbon dioxide emissions. See how many tons of carbon dioxide emissions you can save by switching.

Use PET Plastic Instead of Glass
When you use PET plastic instead of glass, natural resources are saved because it takes less energy to produce. Because PET is also lighter than glass, transportation and fuel costs are reduced. In other words, using PET will help reduce costs and improve the carbon footprint. Our Glass-to-PET Conversion Calculator exemplifies how choosing PET on a typical order can help improve your bottom line.

Switch from Glass to HDPE Plastic
In terms of sustainability, plastic is well-known for having some significant advantages for the consumer. Our new conversion calculator allows you to see the environmental impact of switching from a glass bottle to a comparable HDPE plastic bottle. See how selecting plastic can improve your carbon footprint.
Switch to Child Resistant Closures that Use Less Plastic
Selecting a child resistant closure that uses less plastic ensures that you’re taking a positive step towards improving the sustainability of your plastic packaging.
For instance, switching to a single wall, one-part closure – such as our Snap Cap or Pop & Click™ from a double wall, two-part closure, like our SecuRx® closure – reduces carbon dioxide emissions during production, while still maintaining application versatility, FDA-approval, and passing child resistant safety regulations*.
