The Evolution of Drug Plastics Closures

At Drug Plastics, we make a variety of closures, each with different characteristics. We manufacture our bottles and closures to work together – to make a packaging system that safeguards the prescription and self-care medications, supplements, and lifestyle products that are packaged inside.

We produce our closures with the same commitment to repeatable quality that we apply to our bottles and follow the same strict manufacturing processes. But did you know that Drug Plastics didn’t manufacture closures until the early 2000’s? Let’s take a look at how our closure business began.

Evolution of Drug Plastics Closures

In the early years of our history, Drug Plastics manufactured plastic bottles for a variety of personal care and cosmetic products, as well as household chemicals. We began focusing more on the pharmaceutical part of our business in the late 1990’s.

As our pharmaceutical customer base grew and they experienced our reputation for strict quality, they began asking if we could manufacture closures. At that time, our customers would purchase the bottles they needed from us, but had to look elsewhere for the closures.

They wanted a complete package – a bottle and closure that worked together – and wanted both components to be manufactured to the exacting standards of quality for which Drug Plastics was known. This one-stop shop approach made sense to us and was a natural evolution for the business.

In fact, we knew that this approach would provide a seamless buying experience for our customers. It would save them time: no more sourcing closures from other companies that may or may not work with the bottle they purchased from us. It would prevent problems on their filling lines: the closure would be made to the exact specifications of the bottle, and would ensure that the components worked together. It would also provide piece-of-mind: they recognized our commitment to quality and felt confident that this would translate into a quality closure product.

Drug Plastics Purchases Top Seal® Corporation

In 2001, we purchased Top Seal Corporation with manufacturing sites in Phoenix, AZ and Edinburgh, IN. The new company was branded as Top Seal® Corporation, a Drug Plastics Family Company.

The most significant product that came along with this purchase was the SecuRx® Closure line. The SecuRx Closure was a patented technology that changed the trajectory of Drug Plastics as a packaging supplier to the pharmaceutical industry.

The closures offered exceptional child resistance and complimented our line of bottles. This was especially important to the pharmaceutical industry: keeping product secure and out-of-reach of children is imperative for prescription and self-care medications.

The challenge for us was to ensure that the closure product would live up to the quality level of our bottles. That’s why the company wasn’t fully integrated with the Drug Plastics name until 2007, when it became Drug Plastics Closures.

In addition to closures under the SecuRx family, our product line also includes: Continuous Thread, Dispensing Top, Pop & Click™ Child Resistant, Snap Cap Child Resistant, and Specialty SecuRx Child Resistant, among others. Each closure family is suited to different types of pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and lifestyle products, and each closure works with specific Drug Plastics bottles. All of our closures are available in a variety of sizes and colors.

When you work with us, our knowledgeable team will help you to determine which closure is the best choice for the bottle you select, as well as for the product that will be packaged inside.
