Flame Treatment Elimination

An easy way to conserve fossil fuels like natural gas is to opt out of the flame treatment process. Historically, the use of flaming in the plastic bottle manufacturing process ensured that water-based adhesive labels and silk screening would adhere properly to HDPE, LDPE, and PP bottles. Today, this is not always necessary, depending on the label type you are using.*

Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) PET

You can help decrease greenhouse gas emissions levels that are damaging our planet by switching to PCR PET packaging for your pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, or lifestyle products. Making new products from PCR PET removes plastic from the environment by converting PET plastic discarded by the consumer back into resin that can be used again.

It is also fully recyclable in the current PET recycle stream. PCR PET retains the same properties, performance, and application versatility as traditional PET, is FDA-approved, and passes ASTM and USP testing.

Source Reduction

Also known as right-weighting, the same bottle may be able to be manufactured with less plastic.

A bottle with too little plastic may be too thin to hold up to filling lines or may deform after product is filled.

A bottle with excess plastic may be unnecessary and results in wasted plastic and added costs.

Managing Minimum Wall Thickness

Using a 75cc Artistic Series Wide-Mouth Pharmaceutical Round bottle as an example, right-weighting seeks to identify the required wall thickness for your product. Additional weight may be able to be removed from the bottle if results still adhere to the customers’ MVTR, top load, labeling and other requirements.

11g bottle averages .034” minimum wall at midpoint

17.5g bottle averages .075” minimum wall at midpoint

Using Less Plastic for Bottle Closures

For example, a 38mm Continuous Thread Smooth Side Smooth Top may be able to be manufactured at 1.9g versus 3.1g. That reduction saves 38% plastic.

Reusable Plastic Pallets

Convert to reusable plastic pallets: they will last longer than wood pallets, eliminate pallet moisture and improve safety in handling.

Using durable plastic pallets instead of wood pallets reduces the use of raw materials in the pallet manufacturing process (natural gas, metal, forests, etc.), aiding in efforts towards Zero Net Deforestation.

Returnable plastic pallets also provide savings over the long term.

Biodegradable Trends

Legislative trend - California is enacting legislation to control the claims and use of biodegradable plastic.

Corporate trend - Major companies, like Walmart, are not approving the use of biodegradable additives for plastics made from petroleum.

Petrochemical industry trend - This industry is supporting recycling of plastics, not biodegradability.

Drug Plastics fully supports recycling of plastics and continues to evaluate the market and potential use of biodegradable options.
